How to Make Dimensional Flowers

When you're tracing those pattern pieces onto the freezer paper, keep like-color pieces together, and keep the size of the wool felt sheets in mind. For example, trace all of the dark green grass pieces together, and trace them within a space on the paper no larger than the dark green wool felt sheet provided in the felt kit.

Iron the freezer paper pieces (shiny side down) onto the wool felt using a hot iron. Cut out the pieces with sharp scissors.

Begin assembling the basket by stitching one end of the handle onto the center side, as shown. I used a simple straight stitch, and I used two strands of DMC embroidery floss (color #728 - a perfect match for my Butter Yellow wool felt). Repeat with the opposite end of the handle on the other side of the basket.

I folded in the corners, and stitched with a blanket stitch. Most of these stitches don't even show once the basket is finished so you can do a simple whip stitch or straight stitch if you prefer.

Next, the long Kelly Green grass (the lighter green wool felt) is wrapped around the corners of the basket. Evergreen (the darker color) wool felt is layered on top. Initially I thought I would stitch both layers of grass, but ended up stitching only through the dark green layer. The stitches were enough to hold both layers of grass to the basket. I like the way the lighter green longer blades of grass are more loose and free... more like real grass!

I played around using different stitches. I tried a whip stitch, a straight stitch and a back stitch. The embroidery floss (DMC #890) matched my Evergreen wool felt so perfectly that it's hard to see the stitches at all. Which is absolutely fine with me!

These can be done as simply as you like, or some fun details can be added. All pieces are lightly stuffed with wool stuffing. I gave the bunny some whiskers with a few straight stitches and I added little paws. All of the fine details on each piece are stitched first, before stitching around the outside of the piece. Each piece required such a tiny bit of stuffing that I simply layered the stuffing in between the front and back and stitched everything together.

The cracked egg is blanket stitched from Sand wool felt with DMC floss #842. This was a very simple piece. I like the natural egg shell look. The little chick can be removed from the shell. His beak required just a few straight stitches with DMC floss #741 which matches my Goldfish wool felt. Eyes are french knots using DMC floss #844, a very dark charcoal grey. The fluff on the top of the little chick's head was whip stitched from the inside to secure, then the body was stitched together with a blanket stitch.

I could have done the stripes on the decorated egg with a few simple straight stitches but I decided to have a little fun with a lazy daisy stitch in white, followed by a meandering backstitch and some french knots in the center of each little flower. DMC floss #894 is a perfect match for my Carnation Pink wool felt.

The bunny (Camel wool felt, DMC floss #437) had to have a white fluffy tail.... I used one of my Tiny Blossom Die Cut flowers.

The carrot is embellished with some little wrinkle lines. Victoria (the pattern's designer) referred to the lines as 'carrot wrinkles' which I thought was quite cute. I will never look at carrots again without noticing their little wrinkles ; ) The two separate pieces of the carrot top were stitched together with a straight stitch and a contrasting green floss - DMC #989. The carrot top was whipstitched into place from the inside, then the front and back carrot pieces were blanket stitched together.

Did That!Three months of intense preparation led up to the big day(s) at the American Sewing Expo in Novi, Michigan this past weekend. I loved meeting everyone in person! How fun to watch the reaction of people when the saw all of the colors and felt the fabulous felt! I heard such wonderful comments... the 'oooohs' and the 'ahhhhhhhhhs' were plentiful as I expected they would be.

Some of my favorite moments were when on-line customers recognized my name and my wool felt and came to introduce themselves. I totally loved it!! Overall it was a fabulous experience and I hope to do it again. Now that I've been through it once, the next time will be a piece of cake!
From Lolli Dolls, Anne sent me adorable 'Zoe' (made with FeltOnTheFly felt, of course) as a
wonderful example of her doll patterns, pictured on the right, 'Rosie', 'Ellie' and 'Grace'. Zoe and the patterns were much
admired. Check out those eyes! They are hand-embroidered. The hair, the dresses, the shoes.... all in wool felt! So crazy cute... and the patterns are well-written and detailed. Even instructions for those sweet little socks are included.
Also on display in my booth were adorable little creations from Kendrea of BitsOfMe (currently on vacation from Etsy) including those sweet little acorn cap dolls inspired by Sally Mavor's book, Felt Wee Folk.

One more very eye-catching item on display in my booth was this lovely egret and grape leaf pin created by SandhraLee who shares with me a love of wool felt and Florida. The pin is made with my wool felt, a cotton batik print and beads:
I was happy to show off the work of crafters I admire. When shoppers asked 'What can I make with this amazing wool felt?', I was able to show them some terrific examples of projects.

The show was wonderful. I surely couldn't have done it without the help of good friends. Many hands helped in the preparation, and some experienced friends gave me very good advice and suggestions. My heartfelt thanks to all!

And a special thanks to Felicia Kramer for allowing me to use photos she took of my booth at the Expo. feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-39301945368750762692012-09-24T08:13:00.002-04:002012-09-24T08:17:30.051-04:00Live and In Person! For the last three months I've been preparing for the American Sewing Expo show (September 28, 29, 30, 2012).
In my last post I told you about the 'Feather Your Nest' competition over at Stumbles & Stitches. Wow! That was *so* much fun! And I stand corrected: there were 73 entries (not 72 as previously reported - oopsie). There was such a flurry of entries, deadlines, voting, narrowing down the field, voting again, prizes, categories of winners.... a girl can get confused!! I nearly missed the fact that my Falling Leaves Pillow was voted one of the top ten favorites by some pretty impressive judges! Thank you, dear judges for the recognition!

Forgive me if I've mentioned this before, but I've been up to my eyebrows in felty wool felt (an nuthin' BUT felty wool felt) for over three years now, and have not taken the time to do much stitching. It seems as though the universe is calling out to me to change my ways and come up out of the felt mines once in a while and enjoy the pleasures of my sewing room once again. I remember once upon a time when I was actually designing patterns... hmmm.....
put their heads together recently and came up with a great challenge -
they call it 'Feather Your Nest'. The point of the challenge was to
make something for your home using stitches, and something up-cycled or
re-purposed.

I loved the idea of the challenge and made a long list of all the
possibilities... it was a little hard to narrow it down! But finally, an
obvious choice emerged.

I wanted to add a personal touch to my new living room furniture, so I thought a pillow would be perfect. Designing 'on the fly', I die-cut feather-ish shapes from my felty wool felt, hand-stitched them to a contrasting panel, bordered the panel with cording, and framed it with a felted wool fabric purchased eons ago from who knows where...and stuffed it by cutting down an extra bed pillow that was going to be sent to Salvation Army in the very near future!
I named the pillow 'Falling Leaves' and it was designed to be displayed in a vertical position, but I think it works vertically as well. The colors blend with both the patterned chair and the more solid color on the couch.
There were 72 'Feather Your Nest' entries - wow! That was a terrific response to the challenge, don't you think? You can see all of the entries and vote for your favorites right here.
Please note, I am not asking you to 'vote for ME!' as I find that
sooooo irritating. I'd sincerely like you to vote for the entries that
you like best. Voting ends tomorrow - Thursday, May 3, so don't wait if you want to vote! feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-48442886217277281862012-03-06T16:17:00.000-05:002012-03-06T16:28:05.984-05:00Festival of Broken NeedlesI'm so intrigued and enchanted by the rituals of cultures older than mine. The USA is such a young country in comparison to most of the world. Here in this country we are, in some ways, lucky to have access to so much and yet that leads to taking so much for granted.

I was so very moved when I recently discovered the Festival of Broken Needles, held every February 8 in Japan. I'm thinking that it was a good thing that I discovered this custom a few days after it was celebrated this year because I can now thoughtfully prepare for next year's ceremony.

The Festival of Broken Needles, also known as Hari-Kuyo is an annual ceremony held at Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples for sewists, tailors and kimono makers. Their worn and broken pins and needles, saved throughout the year, are laid to rest, thanked and honored for their faithful service.

I love that the value of small, inanimate objects is recognized and appreciated. The concept that serviceable tools not be lost, wasted or carelessly replaced appeals to me. In researching this post, I read about a woman's Grandmother who always had a needle woven into the fabric of her dress, ready to be called into service. Every day. And the Grandmother had only one needle. Imagine her connection with that needle, and the care she had to take so that the needle wasn't lost. That kind of connection is worthy of ceremony when it's days are done, don't you agree?

Another aspect of the Needle Mass is the recognition that women have 'secret sorrows' which are reflected upon during the many hours spent stitching and that those sorrows are passed on to the needle which helps to bear the burden. To show such reverence for a seemingly simple tool is, in the act of this ceremony, a living prayer. In fact, the women who participate in this requiem ceremony pray that their sewing skills will improve in the coming year.

To honor her own needles, Susan Elliott of PlaysWithNeedles designed this gorgeous needlebook and e-class. The class has already begun and, sadly, it's too late to join in, but maybe Susan will offer another...I can hope, right?
And I have to say that I'm quite thrilled that Susan chose FeltOnTheFly wool felt for her beautiful needlebook. I had no clue when she ordered the wool felt that she was working on such a meaningful project. If it hadn't been for Susan sending me a link to her blog post showing the needlebook, I may have never learned about Hari-Kuyo. Thank you, Susan! You can see Susan's personal needle ceremony right here.
So now that I know about this 400-year-old Festival of Broken Needles, and since I have vowed to make more time for stitching this year, I will need to create something special; some soft place in which to rest my broken and bent needles and pins so that I may properly and thoughtfully say goodbye to them on February 8, 2013. I don't plan to travel to Japan for the official ceremony, but I'll come up with something right here in the USA...

Beautiful in it's simplicity, I hope you'll take a few minutes to scroll through this booklet:
This is the blog post I promised a few days ago when I left you with a little teaser of what I was working on...

I made something! Yay! I'm usually up to my eyeballs in the Felt Mines doing all the things I do on a regular basis to keep my business running smoothly. But lately I've had an overwhelming urge to make something, and an underwhelming urge to find the time. But thanks to an internet connection with Erin of Clever Charlotte and that rare and wondrous thing called serendipity, I made an Embroidery Folder!

It all started when Erin was inspired by the colors in this artwork by Alyssa Nassner of SmallTalkStudio.

Erin wondered if I could pull together some of my wool felt colors to recreate Alyssa's unique palette in her 'Dream Catcher' print (silly goose... I can recreate any palette!!) for an embroidery/needle case she wanted to make for herself. Here are the colors I chose:
Once I saw this pretty pile of wool felt, I started thinking about a project that had been brewing in my mind for quite some time...an Embroidery Folder using parts and pieces cut with dies. My name, Felt On The Fly, comes from the fact that I love to design 'on the fly'! It always starts with a need, which fuels my creativity and off I go - designing from my imagination.

Erin and I decided that we would each design our own project using the same color palette and compare results when we were done. You can see her finished project right here.

My wool felt cuts like a dream with most of the popular dies available in craft stores and on-line. I used just three Sizzix dies for all of the parts and pieces shown here.

The largest pieces were cut with the Sizzix 'Pocket Page and Tag' die which requires the huge Sizzix Big Shot Pro Die Cutting Machine. The smaller embellishments were cut with the Sizzix 'Flower Layers #7' die and the Sizzix 'Jungle Leaves' die using the smaller, more manageable Sizzix Big Shot Die Cutting Machine.

I knew I'd need lots of pockets for my Embroidery Folder because I like to carry lots of bits and pieces around while I'm designing and stitching. Lucky for me, the 'Pocket Page and Tag' die includes holes - so much neater than trying to make little slices with scissors! Those holes made it really easy to insert metal rings to keep the pocket pages lying flat when the Folder is open.

Some creative cutting and folding and stitching ensued and, what the heck, why not toss in a few sparkly little beads too... and here's what the inside of my Embroidery Folder looks like:

There are three layers of pockets. Each of the top two layers open
like a book. The bottom layer is one large pocket. I used the tag die
cuts to make a needlebook and a handy little layered pocket for reading
glasses and my needle threader - both of those little extras fit right
inside the Embroidery Folder making one nice, neat little package.

I cut out embellishments using the same color palette and used those embellishments to repeat the theme of Alyssa's artwork.

And finally, so you can get an idea of how all of this looks when it's actually being used...here it is, stuffed with the bits and pieces of my next project!

Here's a few close-ups of some of the detail work...

The three-dimensional flower is actually three flower die cuts, folded in quarters, embellished with beads and stitched together.

I love the 'Jungle Leaf' die. Looks just like a feather, don't you think?

And here's the simple leaf/feather design again - simply embellished with minimal embroidery and a few tiny beads.

All done! Easy peasy! Thanks, Erin, for the unintentional wool felt project throw down! I look forward to the next challenge, whether it's matching a color palette or designing another project on the fly....
Mandy used a few of the parts and pieces from my Wool Felt Heart and Key Die Cut set that was featured over on Larissa's blog, mmmcrafts back in January. The Die Cut Set was free with a purchase from my shop for a limited time (See??? It pays to follow me around and see what I might be handing out for free!!) and Larissa and I challenged readers to upload their finished projects to a special Flickr group - using all or some of the die cuts - for a chance to win even more felty wool felt.
Larissa and I were really impressed with Mandy's sewing skills. Wow, that girl is one neat sewist! I love the sweet, simple design and the soft, pretty color combination. The little bookmark is just too cute. Mandy told me that she got her sewing machine just about a year ago, but it was only recently that she actually started using it. I'd say she's a natural and I hope to see more of her work.

Mandy, thanks so much for sharing your project. It sure was a pleasure to meet you!feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-34431113160296050892012-02-17T11:11:00.000-05:002012-02-17T11:11:25.903-05:00Thank you Clever Charlotte! There's a great Winter Woolle Blog Series going on over at Clever Charlotte. Erin (one half of theErin/Carla team that makes up Clever Charlotte - ummmm, maybe Erin and Carla are two-thirds of the team. We shouldn't forget Charlotte, right??) invited me to write a blog post for the series and I was very glad to oblige. I can *talk* a blue streak about all things felt, but when it comes to *writing* about it I usually freeze up (hence the skimpy quantity of posts on my own blog!). But once I commit to something, I like to follow through, ya know? So thank you Erin for the invitation which forced me - in the nicest possible way of course - to write something!
Erin and Carla design fabulous patterns for children's wear - very classic 'clothing patterns for modern children'. They sell their patterns and even fabric kits for uber-convenience on their website. As a little added bonus, check out the 'Meet Charlotte' page on their site for a cute little story. Not only are their patterns original and sweet, I love their consistent nod to the brand that is Charlotte : )
While Erin was putting together the blog post, she came across some gorgeous artwork which inspired us (with the artist's permission of course) to pull together the same color scheme in my felty wool felt. Erin already had an idea rolling around in her head about what she would like to make using those colors, and I had an idea rolling around in my head too.... so, I'll leave you with this little teaser and a promise of a blog post with my finished project. I hope to share a link to Erin's finished project as well!
It *is* a big felt universe! Everywhere you look these days there is felt. And of course, we all know that there are lots of different types of felt. And I'll bet you've heard of and/or worked with several types, but did you know that not all felts are created equal? I've said those words a bazillion times and the truth of that statement hit home for me once again today, but in a slightly different way.

Let's talk about wool felt (ha! no surprise that I'd want to talk about wool felt, is it?!). I just added a brand new listing in my shop for a big fluffy pile of felty wool felt ***and*** Jeanette Lim's book "Big Little Felt Universe".

After browsing through the book, ooh'ing and ahh'ing over the adorable projects (at least 70 of them - all in one book!!), I decided to take a gander at the fine print. The author states 'Not all felt is created equally.' Sweet! I thought I'd found someone of like mind. However, sadly enough, the author goes on to express her opinion that 100% wool felt is 'too thick' for the projects featured in her book. WHAT??? Clearly, dear author, you have not tried my luscious pure wool felt. That comment truly does make me sad as I can completely assure you, dear readers, that my felt is the *perfect* felt for the cute projects featured in this book : )

My point is that not even 100% wool felts are created equal. "SERIOUSLY?" you may ask... Yes, seriously. How could that be? Wool is wool, right? Well, it's actually kind of simple. There are hundreds of different breeds of sheep. Each one producing a wool fiber. But different sheep produce fiber specific to that sheep. Sure, it's still all 100% wool, since, after all, that's what a sheep's fiber is.... but some fiber can be thick, or thin, or long, or short, or thick, or stiff, or curly or straight. And then you have to factor in exactly how that fiber is processed into felt. And of course there's the dyes that color the fiber that are to be considered. It all makes a huge difference in the end product.

Perhaps the author of Big Little Felt Universe used a 100% wool felt from Nepal. Holy smokes, now there's some thick, stiff felt! Totally not the best choice for the projects in the book. Or maybe she used a 100% wool felt that was hand-felted. Most likely, that would be too thick because as wonderful as us humans are, we generally can't process fiber to the extent that a machine can. Perhaps she used a 100% wool felt that was something other than merino and initially created and processed for an application other than crafting. And in that instance, the felt may have been processed harshly and dyed with environmentally un-friendly dyes. That type of wool felt wouldn't be the best choice for her projects either.

It just makes me a little sad when I read something that's just tossed out to the masses as if it were fact - something that is a misinformed generalization. Yes, it's true. All felts are not created equal. Even when they are 100% wool. Because there are several other important aspects to consider, as mentioned above.

If you're looking for a pure wool felt for hand stitching, you won't find anything better than my pure merino wool felt. This felt was specifically created for handcrafts exactly like those pictured in the book. It's created from one of the finest wool fibers available. Because it's completely natural wool, the fibers felt together with very little energy (and that's environmentally friendly!). This felt is fine, strong, color-saturated, color-fast, fade-resistant and toxin-free. Not only is my felt the perfect thickness for hand or machine stitching, it cuts like a knife thru warm buttah, holds stitches beautifully, and can be hand-washed and air-dried.

So there ya have it. Felty sets the record straight : ) I feel so much better now.feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-60702834814157599212011-12-06T11:57:00.000-05:002011-12-06T11:57:43.361-05:00Givin' It Away....over at TheLongThreadEllen Luckett Baker of TheLongThread posted a give-away today - it's my merino wool felt 'Apple' color story. IT'S NOT TOO LATE.... to get a wool felt kit for Christmas. Whether you'd like to stitch something up to give as a gift, or if you'd like to give the gift of a kit, there's still time!
You know the saying about giving a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime? Well, that sentiment holds true as well for crafting. Here's Felty's take on it:

I came across that sweet little sentiment a long time ago and I've never forgotten it. Days get busy and I don't always find the time to be extra thoughtful, but considering the season, it's only natural to be in gift-giving mode. Here in Michigan, winter is now here. We've already had snow flurries and the air is clear and chilly; the night sky filled with stars...

Stars have been a special symbol for me since my son was born (nearly eighteen years ago!!) and in the spirit of giving, I'm offering a set of five die cut wool felt stars with every order in my Etsy shop. Just mention 'Felty Twinkles' in 'Notes to Seller' upon check-out and a little gift of stars will be yours.

The stars measure 1 3/4" from tip to tip. I know you'll think of a bazillion ways to use them...scatter them on your table, attach to ribbon for a garland, adorn a tree, use as a little gift tag, stitch onto a project...stitch two together and lightly stuff...tuck one in a loved one's pocket for luck....and of course, you could always use them to wish upon...feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-74659529360860880202011-10-27T21:03:00.000-04:002011-11-19T20:44:20.003-05:00Wool Felt Peter Pan Collar TutorialWell, hello you dusty little blog, you! *swipes at cobwebs*

And so we meet again...at long last. It's not that I don't think of you. In fact, truth be told, you haunt me. What? So why don't I post more often you ask? Well, there are a hundred perfectly good reasons.

K. Now that we've got that all settled....

Hey! This was soooo cool! Thanks to Etsy's new little Shop Stats toy, I noticed recently that I had lots of views on a particular listing in my shop. So I scrolled around in the Stats and noticed in Top Traffic Sources a blog I'd never seen before: "Honestly....WTF". Really. I didn't make that up. Here's their link: http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-peter-pan-collar/

Upon further investigation I discovered the ladies at Honestly...WTF put together a tutorial to make a cute Peter Pan collar and linked to my shop for felt supplies. Who knew that a Peter Pan Collar could be so cute the second time around?? Well, when a fashion powerhouse like Louis Vuitton decides that, yes indeedy, Peter Pan Collars are most definitely fashion-forward, trendy and worthy of runway status, you can bet your bellbottomed bippy that those collars are indeed the latest 'must have' accessory.

The tutorial was put together for an article for Lucky Magazine. Man oh man, these chicks are *connected* and I'm so happy they linked to my humble little shop....

So scoot on over to Honestly...WTF, (http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-peter-pan-collar/) download the template and get started on your super-simple-Louis-Vuitton-Wanna-Be-Wool-Felt-Peter-Pan-Collar. Hey....now that I'm thinkin about it, why the heck didn't Louis come to me for felt??? Hmmmm??? Louis? Are you listening? My felt is the feltiest wool felt, truly environmentally friendly, soft to the touch, gloriously gorgeous and a joy to behold. I realize you made yours out of who-knows-what, but next time Louis, how about thinkin outside the boring old linen or cotton box and come try FeltOnTheFly 100% pure merino wool felt. Just sayin'.

And for the rest of you, imagine this sweet collar made in any of the 96 colors in my shop. Personally, I'm thinkin' Camel... Maybe this would be the perfect gift for the girlfriend who has everything.... your grandma.... or, why not, even for a pampered pooch. And for sure, anyone who carries a Louis Vuitton bag.... or reads Lucky Magazine...
Make sure that wool felt is what you're getting!

When I read a label, for example, on the front of a juice bottle and that label proclaims 'JUICE!', I expect...well, juice! Fruit juice! All juice. And nuttin' but juice! But is it ever really just juice? Closer inspection of the label on the back of the bottle will tell the sad tale...the contents are often a lot more than just juice. In fact, the amount of actual JUICE is minimal.

The same thing is true for WOOL FELT. That's a term that's tossed about willy-nilly and it drives me a bit bonkers. It happens far too often that a felt product is labeled WOOL FELT when, actually, it contains only a small amount of wool. Now I ask you...if the amount of fiber in a felt product is primarily something other than wool, does that felt product deserve to be called 'wool felt'? I think not...

The term 'wool felt' seems to me like it should be reserved for a product that is MOSTLY wool. As opposed to being mostly something else other than wool. I'm OK with the term 'wool blend'. At least you would know right up front that it's not pure wool felt.

So when shopping for wool felt, watch the fine print. Make sure you're getting pure, 100% wool felt and not a blend containing very little actual wool fiber. Or, better yet, just come visit Felt On The Fly at Etsy and know that you are at the premier source of pure, 100% wool felt - and nuttin but!

Oh, and did I mention the abundance of 96 gorgeous colors of wool felt (yeah, the really awesome 100% kind) available in my shop?!?!?feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-37194963917134075852011-03-17T18:12:00.000-04:002011-03-18T07:46:21.186-04:00Vintage Treasure!
Oh my gosh, how sweet is this! Yay!

This list includes the new 'Blueberry Sky' which perfectly matches my Wedgwood Blue felt. Another new PaperTrey Ink color is 'Fine Linen'. That's a tricky one! I don't have a match for it, but depending on how you're using it, there are lots of possible contrasting colors you could add. Need some help? Let me know!

I don't like to match up my felt with the paper colors until I get an actual paper swatch in my hot little hands. I haven't yet had the pleasure of seeing 'Pine Feather' in person, although I suspect I have the perfect match. Be the first to contact me to make arrangements to send me a 4" square of Pine Feather, and I'll send you - at no charge whatsoever - a 6" x 8" sheet of my matching wool felt. What a deal!

Here's the list arranged in alphabetical order according to PaperTrey Ink's color names:

PaperTrey Ink Colors - Felt On The Fly Colors:

Aqua Mist - Bermuda Blue

Berry Sorbet - Coral Pink

Blueberry Sky - Wedgwood Blue

Dark Chocolate - Dark Brown

Enchanted Evening - Blue

Harvest Gold - Butter Yellow

Hawaiian Shores - Bermuda Blue

Hibiscus Burst - Hot Pink

Lavender Moon - Soft Plum

Lemon Tart - Light Yellow

Melon Berry - Coral

New Leaf - Fern Green

Ocean Tides - Green Patina

Orange Zest - Melon

Plum Pudding - Lilac

Pure Poppy - Red

Raspberry Fizz - Lavender Pink

Ripe Avocado - Avocado

Scarlet Jewel - Merlot

Simply Chartreuse - Spring Green

Smokey Shadow - Slate Grey

Spring Rain - Light Blue

Spring Moss - Yellow-Green

Stamper's Select White - White

Summer Sunrise - Marigold

Sweet Blush - Light Pink

Terracotta Tile - Orange-Red

True Black - Black

Vintage Cream - Ecru

Please note: My wool felt color, Bermuda Blue, appears twice on the list above. His name was Slavko, and, until he died and I saw post after post after post about him in the Etsy forums, I had never even heard of the man. Turns out, he was the kind of man I wish I had had the honor of knowing.

Many people posted comments and stories about Slavko. They talked about what a wonderful family man he was. They talked about how friendly and helpful he was. He was certainly talented, I could see that from his work. And he took the time to reach out to people - to connect with them, to help them, to offer advice.

Reading all of the posts about Slavko brought me to tears. Because of wonderful things that were said about him. Because of all the thoughtful things he did. And because I missed out on knowing a really incredible man.

Just days after his death, I was lucky enough to have an item from my shop, FeltOnTheFly, featured in a treasury that was created in honor of Slavko. I was really moved, because I had felt such strong emotions upon learning about the man. And today, imagine my surprise when I was notified that another item from my shop was featured in a treasury - and it was another treasury dedicated to Slavko. I mean, what are the chances, right?

If you believe as I do, that certain things happen for a reason, then you will understand when I say that this experience has given me cause to reflect on the meaning of this "coincidence". Again, I am moved, and I am inspired to reach out to others in the manner that I imagine Slavko did. Not that I am anywhere near as special as he was, but I can reach out in my own way, and can make a conscious effort to do so. Every kind thing that we can do for someone else makes the whole world a better place.

I may not have had the pleasure of knowing Slavko, but I will certainly have the pleasure of becoming a better person thanks to the example he set.

This treasury, by the way, was created by a lady who is a buyer on Etsy. Thank you Cyn.
feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-44763098400300811792009-07-26T19:50:00.000-04:002009-07-26T20:34:50.418-04:00My Art Fair TreasuresToday I needed an art fair fix. Didn't have to be a big fancy drive-far-away, get-there-early-stay-all-day event, just a casual stroll in a lovely park was what I was craving. And I found just the perfect thing. Just a little arts and crafts fair in a lovely neighborhood type park, on a perfect day: 70's, breezy, mostly sunny...ahhhhh, perfect. Just enough artists to keep it interesting, and the smell of kettle corn in the air.

Here are the lovely treasures that called out to me and insisted on following me home:

Hand painted vintage picnic tins. The lady who painted these told me that she wasn't sure about the orange, but she thought the colors looked "happy". I agree! I created this one recently to go along with a Proposal Pouch I made for a bride getting married in August. Her color scheme is "Pistachio Green". I thought it was so pretty combined with pink.

In Europe, a Dorothy Bag is a small drawstring bag that's used like an evening bag. My little pouch is a bit smaller, so I call it a Dottie Bag. (Made sense to me at the time.) This little pouch is large enough for small jewelry box, for wrapped candies, tea bags, a gift card...you get the picture! What a sweet way to "wrap" a little gift. It's also the perfect thing to hold jewelry while traveling.

To see more Dottie Bags, take a look at my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/feltonthefly/
feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-82144016718372538732009-07-16T19:56:00.001-04:002009-07-16T19:56:46.160-04:00Not Everyone Has a Mantle!

Christmas Boots 001
Originally uploaded by Felt on the Fly
It's true. Not everyone has a fireplace and a mantle from which to hang traditional Christmas Stockings. If you need an alternative to tradition, perhaps this Christmas Boot would do. Because of it's size and shape, it holds as much, if not more, than a normal stocking. Sits on a table, the foot of a bed, the corner of the couch...you know, on any flat surface. This Boot was so much fun to design and I keep coming up with new ways to embellish them!

Yes, I know - it's ONLY July. But with all this Etsy talk of "Christmas in July" I just thought I'd show you these now. If you'd like to see more variations on this little theme, please take a look at my Etsy shop. More designs coming soon! Hmmmm, I'm thinking pirates...and feathers...and mermaids...and stars...and lace...
feltontheflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14827986987301167123noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6539019003226838723.post-65312650042602453522009-07-16T00:37:00.001-04:002009-07-16T00:37:45.963-04:00Treasury West, "Mine", by iluvlucy8

Treasury West, "Mine", by iluvlucy8
Originally uploaded by Felt on the Fly
Now that I have the actual picture of "Mine" (iluvlucy8), you won't have to go searching for it!

I (have to) believe in learning as I go - if I waited to figure out everything first, I wouldn't be blogging for a few more years!
